Astorga>Rabanal
My walk started just east of Astorga. Another amazing sunrise as I walked into town. There was a gentle breeze and you would hear the wheat, it’s a little like the ocean.
I also heard the wings of a Herron beating as it altered course. I was walking under a power pole that I believe was his intended perch. He saw me and did a big arc and landed on the next power pole down the road. Ohio Herron are a bit skittish as well. He let out a big craw sound and posed for the photo below. I regret missing the Astorga cathedral, but I was able to enjoy its exterior in some spectacular light. Today was a steady uphill march, about 600 feet across 13 miles. It was a relaxed day. Arrived in Rabanal found a great private room at an albergue camping area. It’s a modified shipping container. It’s very comfy and private. I will say that my neighbor is a real ass, literally. A French pilgrim is walking the camino with his donkey and his dog. Way cool. Had a big plate of pasta and ham for lunch. Visited the church and then stopped at the marcato for provisions. On the way back to my box I ran into really fun folks I had dinner with two nights ago. We’re going to meet for dinner.
Magnificent sunrise photo, D! I’m imagining the sounds of the wheat in the gentle breeze.
I like how you write: “Today was a steady uphill march, about 600 feet across 13 miles. It was a relaxed day.” Certainly my typical relaxed day (grin) .
But yes… I do understand it was a relaxed day compared to other Camino days. xoxo Mom
Ugg… That does sound pretentious! As an Ohioan I’m used to hot flat miles, it’s the elevation change that’s so tough!
Not one bit pretentious! I’m comparing my personal activity level (tongue in cheek) to yours . Go Derek!
Great narrative and great pics. Ham and pasta sounds great. You need the carbs.
The bread here is also amazing, I eat it with about every meal!
I am looking forward to the bread, the cheese, and the wine. If I listen really hard, I can hear the wheat. See you soon!
All of the above have been wonderful!
Favorite quote from this post, “on the way back to box…” Awesome accommodations! And I love that the Frenchman is walking with his donkey and dog!
It was a cool box!
