Wednesday, June 12 – To Ponte de Lima

We cut the 22 mile day down again with a taxi as 6 hours a day is our “sweet spot” and leaves us with some energy at our destination. We spent the day walking along vineyards, apple trees, corn and lots of flowers.  The cafes are spaced perfectly to stay hydrated and caffeinated. We usually throw a pastry in the mix for fuel ;-). We met a couple from Canada and the miles went by quickly into Ponte de Lima. We’ve had the past two nights in Alberges (hostel) and the 5 euro fee make the Camino very financially accessible.  The accommodations are simple with bunk rooms, a common area with a washboard and basin and drying racks. It’s an amazing part of the Camino experience getting to know the other pilgrims. Restroom and shower facilities can be a challenge and a single bathroom is often shared by 8-10 pilgrims. Hot water in the shower is a bonus.  Needless to say when we walked into Pointe de Lima and saw the International flags waving in front of the Hotel Imperial we walked right in and book rooms for the night. It’s luxury digs and I spend 15 minutes under the rain shower head in our glass and tile bathroom. Our room has a balcony that overlooks the town square and the river.  Dinner was a feast.Dan and I are both adventurous eaters so we were able to try some unique foods. We had roasted Padron peppers, salt cod, sardines, salad, pig ear, fish cakes and a massive entre made of rice with chicken blood and a giant platter of blood sausage, roasted pork, liver, and sausage. Mona, Concetta and Eunice sampled the exotic fare but didn’t care for the organ meat or the ear.  No room for desert. Got a glorious nights sleep and had a leisurely breakfast of bread, ham, soft cheese, pastry, juice and two strong cups of coffee. We’re in no rush because we’re taking a zero day!!!!!
