Planning:

Cell coverage was spotty at best:

Derek and Eunice should be on the trail at 7:30.  We will be hiking counter clockwise around the outer loop.

Traveling at an estimated 1.5 – 2 mph (averaged with lunch stop) I’ll guesstimate the following:

Arrive water cache point (8 miles) between 11:30 -1:00

Arrive old School house (12 miles) between 1:30 – 3:30

Mark, Jen, and Mona should arrive no later than 1pm to scout campsite.

wildcat scholhouse junctionThe area by old school house looks mowed and possibly private land and you may need to park further down the road.  Make sure to leave a note inside the windshield stating that you are hiking and camping overnight  (recommended by Clintonville Outfitters when I was talking with them about the trip).

Leave a note directing us to the campsite.  If you set up camp north we’ll see you before we hit old school house.  If not, indicate east (connector trail) or south (towards trail head)

Where to leave the note, in preferred order:

1. Car windshield – if car is visible from old school house intersection.
2. Tied to sign or other man made structure by old school house intersection.
3. Tied to a branch at eye level on north side of trail within 50′ of old school house clearing

Contingency:

Derek and Eunice will wait at old schoolhouse.  If no contact by 5:30pm we will hike to trail head, assuming Mark, Jen, and Mona have been eaten by wildcats or bears.

If Derek and Eunice haven’t arrived at old school house by 8:00: check water cache point to determine weather we’ve been eaten by bears before or after that point on the trail.

Food:
Saturday Lunch – Everyone packs their own lunch.
Saturday Dinner – Mark / Jen will have meat/veggies to grill for everyone.  Derek is bringing couscous  as well.
Snacks:  D&M have 4 gallons   of water (D is reserving a 2.5 gal jug for himself), Smore’s fixin’s, Pringles chips, lowfat wheat thins, Corn chips,
Sunday Morning:  Eunice has coffee, sugar/creamer etc,, D&M have plenty of individual oatmeal packets to share and granola bars.  <- Place your order now so we can minimize what we have to haul to the campsite.

Follow-up:

Way too much food, share spreadsheet for distributed provisions.  (aka make sure Derek knows to bring pot for coffee water!)

Two cars? Park one at old schoolhouse with provisions, great campsite 1/4 mile south of old school house on south trail.  Water cache point also worked well.

Directions to Trail Head from Columbus:

Trailhead turn not well marked when heading south on 16.  Look for north facing sign.

70 E to 13 south to Rendville (Just north of Corning)

Cut East on Chapel Hill or Main in Corning.  Main turns into waterworks

These will intersect with Irish Ridge road.  Head South for Trail Head.

Turn left on access road ____________ marked with sign on north side of road to trail head.

When exiting trail head turn right to get back to Irish Ridge road.
