A Banana in Leon

A Banana in Leon

Relaxed morning. Feeling a little anxious to get back on the Camino. Bus trip was nice, talked music with a German pilgrim who is a drummer and watched the Meseta go by. Actually from a bus seat the Meseta looks a lot like Ohio. Just substitute wheat for beans and corn. Found a hotel, Had a pizza for lunch. Toured the cathedral, it was amazing.

Slowly learning how to get by in town, it’s much more complex than the wilderness. Bananas are a good example of in town skills. In small markets you order the bananas, it’s weighed by a clerk, and handed to you. Don’t touch the bananas! Physically inspect the bananas in any way, or even look like you might do this, and the produce clerk will bark a “senior” with a tone that universally says don’t touch the bananas.

In a supermarcato its self serve, but you have to weigh and sticker the bananas. If some oaf fails to do this the checkout clerk has to sprint to the produce station and weigh the bananas. The foolish American pilgrim simply trying to buy a couple of bananas gets mean stares from old Spanish women in line while this occurs.
If you ever need help buying produce in Spain – I’m you man.

Looking forward to being back on the trail. As tomorrow is Sunday, I loaded up on food. Everything is closed on Sunday. I learned that last week. Bread, yogurt, chorizo, and chocolate wafer cookies for dinner…..and breakfast. Perhaps lunch tomorrow. It’s fatiguing, but I really am loving every minute of this trip!

  1. Just today I bought bananas for grandmother. I picked them out myself and weighed them at the self check out. I never had any other person to deal with. This must be difficult for an American. Better luck next time.
